For an apron, extend hardware cloth 12 to 24 inches outward from the fence line, then pin it down and cover it with soil, mulch, gravel, or vegetation. When a fox or dog digs at the fence, it hits the wire and usually gives up rather than backing up to start again.
Secure the roof
Open-top runs are invitations to hawks, owls, climbing raccoons, and adventurous cats. Cover runs with welded wire, hardware cloth, netting, or a solid roof depending on your predator pressure and snow load.
A solid roof has extra benefits: less mud, drier bedding, shade, and better feed protection. Just build it strong enough for your weather. A sagging tarp full of rainwater is not a roof; it is a future mess.
Use serious latches
Raccoons are clever with simple latches. Use two-step latches, carabiners, barrel bolts with clips, or lockable hasps on doors and nest box lids. If a toddler can open it, a raccoon may figure it out too.
Check latches regularly. Wood swells, hinges sag, and doors shift. A latch that worked in summer may not catch properly after a wet fall.
Lock birds in at night
Even with a fenced run, a secure coop lockdown at night is one of the best habits you can build. Close the pop door every evening after birds go in. Automatic doors can help, but inspect them often and make sure no bird gets locked out.
