Choose Your Breeds

Breed selection is the single most important decision you'll make. For egg production, Rhode Island Reds are the gold standard - hardy, friendly, and reliably producing 250-300 large brown eggs per year. Leghorns are the most prolific layers at 280-320 white eggs annually but are flightier and less cold-tolerant. Plymouth Rocks (Barred Rocks) offer an excellent balance of eggs (200-250/year), meat quality, and docile temperament.

For tropical and warm climates, consider Australorps (heat-tolerant, 250 eggs/year), Naked Necks (Turken - outstanding heat tolerance), or Egyptian Fayoumi (disease-resistant, excellent foragers). In cold climates, Orpingtons and Wyandottes thrive with their dense feathering and small combs that resist frostbite.

For a mixed flock, start with 3-4 breeds of 2-3 birds each. This gives you genetic diversity, a variety of egg colors, and protection against breed-specific diseases. Avoid mixing very aggressive breeds (like some game fowl) with docile breeds - the pecking order conflicts can cause stress and reduced laying.

Purchase from NPIP-certified hatcheries (National Poultry Improvement Plan) to ensure birds are tested for pullorum and typhoid. Expect to pay $3-5 per day-old chick, $15-20 for started pullets (8-16 weeks), or $25-35 for point-of-lay hens (18-20 weeks). Started pullets offer the best value - you skip the brooding phase while still having young, productive birds.

Design and Build Your Coop

A well-designed coop is the foundation of a healthy flock. The minimum standard is 4 square feet per bird inside the coop and 10 square feet per bird in the outdoor run. For a flock of 8 hens, that means a coop of at least 32 square feet (roughly 4x8 feet) and a run of 80 square feet.

Ventilation is the most overlooked aspect of coop design. Ammonia from droppings causes respiratory disease faster than cold temperatures ever will. Install ventilation openings near the roofline on at least two walls - the total vent area should equal roughly 1 square foot per 10 square feet of floor space. In winter, keep vents open; just eliminate drafts at roost height.

Roosts should be 2x4 lumber placed wide-side-up, positioned 18-36 inches off the floor, with 8-10 inches of linear space per bird. Stagger roosts at different heights (12-inch spacing) if using multiple bars, but note that all birds will compete for the highest roost.

Nest boxes need one box per 3-4 hens, sized 12x12x12 inches, mounted 18-24 inches off the ground with a lip to hold bedding. Line with pine shavings or straw. Place boxes lower than the lowest roost to prevent roosting (and defecating) in nest boxes.

Flooring: A concrete pad or hardware cloth floor prevents predators from digging in. Cover with 4-6 inches of pine shavings and use the deep litter method - add fresh shavings on top rather than cleaning frequently. The decomposing litter generates gentle heat in winter and composts in place. Clean out entirely twice a year.

Predator protection: Use 1/2-inch hardware cloth (NOT chicken wire, which raccoons can tear). Bury it 12 inches deep around the perimeter or create an apron extending 18 inches outward. Install an automatic coop door ($100-200) that opens at dawn and closes at dusk - this single investment prevents the majority of nighttime predator losses.

Set Up Feed and Water Systems

Laying hens need a 16% protein layer feed as their dietary foundation. Each hen consumes approximately 1/4 pound (4 ounces) of feed per day, or roughly 1.5-2 pounds per week. A 50-pound bag costs $15-20 and feeds 8 hens for about 4 weeks.

Supplement layer feed with oyster shell offered free-choice in a separate container - this provides the calcium needed for strong eggshells. A hen producing an egg every 26 hours requires about 4 grams of calcium daily. Never mix oyster shell directly into feed, as not all birds need the same amount.

Grit (small granite pieces) is essential for birds without access to natural stones. Chickens have no teeth - grit in their gizzard grinds food mechanically. Free-range birds on soil usually find enough natural grit, but confined birds need it supplemented.

Kitchen scraps are an excellent supplement: vegetable trimmings, fruit, cooked rice, and grains. Avoid avocado, raw potato, chocolate, and anything moldy. Scraps should never exceed 10% of total diet, or egg production drops.

Water is the most critical nutrient. A hen drinks 500ml (about 1 pint) daily - more in hot weather. Use nipple waterers or cups to keep water clean. A single contaminated open waterer can spread coccidiosis through an entire flock within days. In freezing climates, use a heated waterer base ($30-40) to prevent ice formation.

Daily Management Routine

Chickens thrive on routine. A consistent daily schedule reduces stress and maximizes egg production. Here's a proven daily workflow that takes 15-20 minutes:

Morning (5-10 minutes): Open the coop door (or let the automatic door handle it). Check feed levels and top off as needed. Verify water is clean and flowing - dump and refill if algae or debris is visible. Do a quick visual health check: are all birds active? Any limping, sneezing, or lethargy?

Midday/Afternoon (5 minutes): Collect eggs. Most hens lay before noon, but some lay in the afternoon. Don't leave eggs in nest boxes overnight - this encourages egg-eating behavior and attracts predators. Check water again in hot weather.

Evening (5 minutes): Verify all birds are inside the coop before the door closes. Do a head count - a missing hen may be broody (sitting on a hidden nest), injured, or taken by a predator. Add any kitchen scraps. Top off feed for overnight.

Weekly tasks: Add fresh bedding as needed (spot-clean droppings under roosts). Scrub and refill waterers with a splash of apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon per gallon - promotes gut health). Check for rodent signs around feed storage.

Monthly tasks: Inspect the coop for damage, loose hardware cloth, or rot. Check birds individually for mites (look under wings and around the vent), lice (visible at the base of feathers), and bumblefoot (swollen foot pads). Dust coop corners with food-grade diatomaceous earth if mites are present.

Egg Collection and Storage

Fresh eggs have a natural protective coating called the bloom (or cuticle) that seals the shell's 7,000+ pores against bacteria. In the United States, commercial eggs are washed (removing the bloom) and must be refrigerated. If you leave the bloom intact, unwashed eggs remain safe at room temperature for 2-3 weeks, or refrigerated for 3+ months.

Collect eggs at least once daily, ideally twice. Eggs left in nest boxes overnight risk being cracked by hens entering the box, eaten by the flock, or attracting snakes and rats. Use a collection basket or egg apron - avoid pockets, as eggs crack against your body when you bend over.

Cleaning: If an egg is slightly dirty, dry-brush with fine sandpaper or a dry cloth. Only wash visibly soiled eggs, and use water warmer than the egg (110°F / 43°C) - cold water causes the egg contents to contract, drawing bacteria inward through the shell. Washed eggs must be refrigerated immediately.

A well-fed flock of 6 hens produces 4-5 eggs daily at peak production (spring/summer). Production drops to 2-3 eggs/day in winter as daylight decreases below 14 hours. You can maintain production by adding supplemental lighting in the coop (a single 9-watt LED on a timer, turning on at 4-5 AM to extend the "day" to 14-16 hours).

Dealing with surplus: Peak production often exceeds family needs. Sell at farmers' markets ($4-7/dozen for pastured eggs), give to neighbors (building community goodwill), or preserve by water-glassing (eggs stored in pickling lime solution last 12-18 months), freezing (crack into ice cube trays), or dehydrating.

Health Management and Disease Prevention

Prevention is far more effective than treatment in poultry health. The three pillars of flock health are biosecurity, nutrition, and stress reduction.

Biosecurity basics: Quarantine new birds for 30 days before introducing them to your flock - this catches diseases with incubation periods. Limit visitor access to your coop area. Don't share equipment with other poultry keepers. If you visit a farm supply store or another farm, change shoes before entering your coop area.

Vaccination: For backyard flocks, the most important vaccine is for Marek's disease - a highly contagious herpesvirus that causes tumors and paralysis. Most hatchery chicks are vaccinated at hatch. If buying from a private breeder, confirm vaccination status. In areas with Newcastle disease, consider that vaccination as well.

Parasite management: Internal parasites (roundworms, cecal worms) are managed through rotational grazing - move your chicken tractor or rotate run access every 2-4 weeks to break parasite life cycles. Fecal float tests (available through your vet or DIY kits for $15) tell you if deworming is needed. External parasites (mites, lice) are controlled with permethrin-based poultry dust, diatomaceous earth in dust bath areas, and regular coop cleaning.

  • Coccidiosis - Bloody droppings, lethargy, puffed feathers. Treat with amprolium (Corid) in water. Prevent by keeping litter dry.
  • Respiratory infections - Sneezing, nasal discharge, wheezing. Often caused by poor ventilation. Isolate affected birds, improve airflow, consult a vet for antibiotics if bacterial.
  • Egg binding - Hen straining, lethargic, distended abdomen. Provide a warm water soak, calcium supplement, and gentle massage. Seek vet help if the egg doesn't pass within hours.
  • Bumblefoot - Swollen, warm foot pad with a dark scab. Caused by jumping from high roosts onto hard surfaces. Requires surgical drainage and antibiotics.
