That does not mean every project is bad or every rural county should slam the gate shut. But communities need sharp pencils and clear rules. How much water will be used? Who pays for grid upgrades? Will local tax revenue outweigh lost farmland and higher utility strain? Are there brownfield or industrial sites that could be used instead?

The bigger lesson is that rural planning is becoming a frontline farm issue. If farmers want a say in what happens to the land around them, they need seats at zoning hearings, utility meetings, and county planning boards.
