New Zealand agritech company Gallagher is scaling up production of its eShepherd virtual fencing neckbands, with plans to make about 140,000 units this year, according to the New Zealand Herald.
Virtual fencing uses collars or neckbands to guide livestock with audio cues and, when needed, mild corrections, keeping animals inside boundaries drawn on a digital map rather than strung with wire. For graziers, that opens some fascinating doors: faster paddock shifts, easier exclusion of wet areas, better utilization of hill country, and fewer days spent repairing fences after storms, wildlife, or one particularly opinionated bull.
The technology fits neatly into a broader trend: livestock systems are being asked to do more with less. Less labor. Less overgrazing. Less nutrient runoff. More data. More flexibility. Virtual fencing could let a producer move cattle across a landscape almost like adjusting irrigation zones — not by tearing around with posts and reels, but by tapping a screen.
Of course, no technology gets a free pass at the farm gate. Ranchers will want to know the durability of the bands, battery life, animal welfare performance, subscription costs, training time, and whether the system behaves when reception gets patchy. A broken app is more annoying than a broken wire if your herd is standing in the neighbor’s crop.
Still, the scale-up is a signal that virtual fencing is moving from curiosity to commercial tool. For farms with complex terrain, expensive labor, sensitive waterways, or ambitious rotational grazing goals, invisible boundaries may soon become part of the very visible business plan.
