Agritech has had its fair share of big promises. We have heard about drones, sensors, apps, satellites, artificial intelligence, and enough dashboards to wallpaper a machine shed. But the next chapter in Indian agritech may be less about dazzling farmers and more about serving them.
The idea gaining ground is that technology should not sit apart from the farm system like a fancy tractor with no fuel. It should make existing systems more intelligent, connected, resilient, and economically useful. That means better links between soil health, weather advice, input planning, irrigation, crop protection, credit, insurance, storage, and markets.
For smallholders especially, the problem is rarely a lack of information alone. It is fragmented information. A farmer may get a weather alert from one source, fertilizer advice from another, market prices from a third, and credit terms from someone else entirely. When those pieces do not talk to each other, the farmer is left stitching together the quilt in the dark.
The practical opportunity is integration. A useful agritech platform should help a farmer decide when to irrigate, what input to apply, how much risk is building, where to sell, and whether the numbers pencil out. In plain language: it should help make better decisions before money leaves the pocket.
My barnyard test for agritech is simple: does it reduce uncertainty, save labor, improve returns, or protect the land? If it does, it earns a place on the farm. If it only adds another login password and a monthly fee, well, that dog may not hunt.
