Telling a farmer to simply use less water is easy from an office chair; figuring out how to keep rural economies alive while doing it is the hard row to hoe.
Still, change is not optional. More efficient irrigation, crop switching where realistic, deficit irrigation strategies, canal lining, groundwater coordination, water banking, and compensation programs for temporary fallowing will all be part of the toolbox. The key is making sure farmers are partners in the redesign, not just names on a cutback list.
The Colorado River’s dry finish line is a symbol, but it is also a spreadsheet. Every acre-foot has claimants. The future of Western farming will depend on whether water policy can move faster than the drought cycle and whether communities can grow food with less slack in the system.
