Compost and biosolids deserve special attention. If plastic-contaminated organic amendments are spread on fields, farms may inherit someone else’s waste problem. Producers buying compost should ask about screening, feedstock sources, contamination standards, and testing. What goes into the soil has a way of sticking around longer than a bad joke at the feed store.

The practical takeaway is to audit plastic use on the farm. Where is it essential? Where can it be reused, collected, replaced, or better disposed of? Food buyers and regulators are likely to ask tougher questions over time, and farms that get ahead of the issue will be better positioned when the market starts separating clean systems from messy ones.
