Now ICIMOD has launched a regional cryosphere strategy to strengthen long-term monitoring of glaciers, snow, and permafrost across the region.

That may sound like science happening far above the farm, but mountain ice has a long shadow. When snowpack changes or glaciers shrink, the timing and volume of downstream water can shift. Farmers may not see the glacier, but they see the canal, the river gauge, the dry paddy, or the pump running longer than it used to.

Better monitoring gives governments and communities a clearer picture of what is coming. It can improve seasonal water forecasts, flood warnings, irrigation planning, and drought response. In agriculture, bad surprises are expensive; good data is like fixing the gate before the herd finds the hole.

The challenge is that climate impacts are not neat and tidy. Some areas may see short-term increases in meltwater before longer-term declines. Others may face more erratic floods, landslides, or glacial lake outburst risks. For farmers downstream, the planning question becomes less about average water and more about dependable water.

This strategy is a reminder that food security starts at the source. If the mountains are changing, irrigation districts, rice growers, vegetable farmers, orchardists, and livestock keepers all need a seat in the water conversation. The snowline may be far away, but the consequences can end up right in the furrow.
