The country uses more urea than the United States and Brazil combined, helped along by subsidies that keep prices far below market levels. That policy has supported food production for millions — but it has also encouraged a heavy hand with nitrogen.

Now war, supply chain strain, and higher procurement costs are forcing a rethink. Cheap urea has been a powerful tool in India’s food security toolbox, especially for smallholders trying to coax yields from tight margins. But when one nutrient is far cheaper than the rest, crop nutrition can get lopsided. It’s a bit like feeding the workhorse only oats and wondering why it still looks off.

The agronomic concern is familiar around the world: overuse of nitrogen can weaken soil balance, reduce efficiency, increase runoff, and leave farmers dependent on ever-higher applications. The sweet spot may be smarter subsidies, better soil testing, precision application, coated or enhanced-efficiency fertilizers, and stronger extension support that helps farmers apply the right nutrient at the right rate.

For growers everywhere, India’s urea squeeze is a useful reminder: fertilizer decisions are no longer just about this season’s yield. They’re about input security, soil resilience, and whether every pound or kilo applied is earning its keep. In a tight-margin world, waste is a weed.
