The company is commercializing research from Admir Masic’s MIT lab to create a cement additive that could increase concrete lifespan by 50% while reducing carbon dioxide emissions to 40% of traditional concrete.
That may sound like a city construction story, but every farmer knows concrete is part of agriculture’s backbone. For farmers, the key will be cost, availability, strength, and performance under real farm abuse. Concrete on farms faces manure acids, freeze-thaw cycles, heavy equipment, livestock traffic, washdowns, and the occasional loader operator who is in a hurry. A clever additive has to survive more than a laboratory test — it has to survive Uncle Ray backing the spreader into the wall.
Still, this is the sort of quiet innovation that can matter. Agriculture often talks about flashy technology — satellites, robots, genetics — but durable infrastructure is just as important. A farm is only as resilient as the foundations it stands on, and sometimes the future is hiding in a very old recipe.
