Across roughly 68,000 acres of solar installations, sheep are grazing land that might otherwise be seen as removed from agriculture. Solar farms need vegetation control. Grass and weeds growing too tall can interfere with access, create fire risk, and shade panels. Traditionally, that means mowing, herbicides, or both. Sheep, however, are low-clearance specialists. They can graze beneath panels without damaging equipment the way larger livestock might, and they turn plant growth into meat, wool, and manure while they are at it.

For ranchers, this can become a new service market. Instead of only selling lambs or wool, flock owners can contract with solar operators for vegetation management. It is an energy facility with wires, roads, gates, and rules. But with the right setup, sheep and solar can fit together like biscuits and gravy.

The bigger story is land stacking — asking one acre to provide more than one benefit. Energy, grazing, soil cover, carbon storage, and rural income can coexist if projects are designed with agriculture in mind from the start.
