For vineyards and orchards, deep roots are a long-term investment. Young plantings often need help getting established, but management choices in the early years can determine whether plants become shallow, pampered sippers or tough, deep-foraging veterans. Soil health is part of the irrigation system, even if it does not come with a pump motor.
The takeaway is not that every farmer should shut off the water tomorrow. It is that water resilience starts before the dry spell. Those old Zinfandel vines are like the grandparent at the table who does not say much until the room gets noisy — and then quietly tells everyone how to survive.
