New Zealand Pastoral Agriculture
New Zealand's agriculture is built on grass. The country's maritime temperate climate, with mild temperatures, reliable rainfall, and year-round grass growth, supports one of the world's most efficient pastoral farming systems. Dairy, sheep, and beef cattle graze on pastures that grow for 10-12 months of the year, producing milk, meat, and wool with minimal supplementary feed.
Dairy farming is New Zealand's largest export industry, with over 12,000 dairy farms producing milk primarily for export as powder, butter, and cheese through cooperatives like Fonterra. The seasonal grass-based system, where cows calve in spring and are dried off in autumn, produces milk at some of the lowest costs in the world.
Sheep farming has been a cornerstone of New Zealand agriculture since the 19th century. While sheep numbers have declined from a peak of 70 million, the industry remains significant, producing fine and strong wool, prime lamb, and mutton. Hill country sheep farms manage stock on steep terrain that is unsuitable for dairy conversion or cropping.
Horticulture and Diversification
Kiwifruit has become New Zealand's most valuable horticultural export, with the Bay of Plenty region producing the majority of the crop. The Zespri brand has created global demand for New Zealand kiwifruit, particularly the gold-fleshed SunGold variety that commands premium prices. Kiwifruit vines grow on pergola or T-bar trellis structures that require careful design for canopy management and harvest access.
Apple production in Hawke's Bay, Nelson, and Otago supplies premium fruit to export markets worldwide. Modern intensive orchards use dwarfing rootstocks and high-density planting (3,000+ trees per hectare) to achieve early production and high yields. Variety selection for color, flavor, and storage life is critical for export competitiveness.
Deer farming is a uniquely New Zealand innovation. The country pioneered the domestication of red deer in the 1970s, developing an industry that now produces premium venison for high-end restaurants and velvet antler for Asian traditional medicine markets. Deer farming requires specialized fencing (1.9m high), purpose-built handling facilities, and understanding of deer behavior and nutrition.
