Irish Pastoral Farm Planner

Irish Pastoral Farm Planner

Design grass-based dairy farms, sheep operations, and mixed farming systems with tiles built for Ireland's maritime climate.

Key Features

🐄

Dairy Cattle

Design dairy farm layouts with milking parlors, paddock rotation, and silage storage. Plan grass-based systems suited to Ireland's maritime climate.

🐑

Sheep Farming

Layout hill and lowland sheep grazing areas with lambing shelters and shearing facilities. Plan stocking rates for different terrain types.

🥔

Potato Fields

Design potato plots with variety selection and rotation schedules. Plan storage and grading facilities for both seed and ware potato production.

🌾

Barley & Grain

Layout spring and winter barley fields for malting and feed. Plan grain drying and storage infrastructure for Ireland's humid harvest conditions.

🌿

Hay Meadows

Design silage and hay meadow management with cutting schedules. Plan bale storage and feeding areas for winter livestock management.

🥛

Dairy Processing

Plan on-farm dairy processing with creamery layouts, cheese-making rooms, and cold storage for artisan dairy products.

Irish Pastoral Agriculture

Ireland's mild, wet maritime climate creates some of the finest grassland in the world. With over 300 days of grass growth per year in southern regions and abundant rainfall, Irish agriculture is fundamentally grass-based. Dairy and beef cattle, sheep, and horses graze on emerald pastures that rarely experience extreme heat or cold.

Dairy farming is Ireland's most valuable agricultural sector, with the country producing over 8 billion liters of milk annually. The expansion of Irish dairy since EU milk quota removal in 2015 has driven significant investment in herd expansion, milking technology, and grass management. Seasonal spring-calving systems maximize the use of grazed grass, Ireland's cheapest feed source.

Sheep farming is particularly important in western and upland areas where terrain is too steep or rocky for cattle. Ireland's sheep flock numbers over 3.5 million breeding ewes, producing lamb for domestic and export markets and wool as a secondary product. Hill breeds like Blackface and Cheviot thrive on rough grazing that would otherwise be unproductive.

Grass-Based Farming Systems

Ireland's competitive advantage in agriculture is grass. The mild Gulf Stream climate supports grass growth from February to November, providing 10-14 tonnes of dry matter per hectare annually. Top dairy farmers achieve over 250 grazing days per year, dramatically reducing the need for purchased feed and housed animal periods.

Paddock-based rotational grazing is the foundation of efficient Irish farming. Farms are divided into 20-30 paddocks that cattle rotate through on a 21-day cycle during peak growth. Each paddock is grazed for 1-2 days then rested, allowing grass to regrow to optimal leaf stage before the next grazing. This system maximizes grass utilization and animal performance.

Silage conservation is critical for the 4-5 months when grass growth slows. Irish farmers typically make two silage cuts: a first cut in late May for high-quality winter feed and a second cut in July-August for bulk. Baled silage in wrapped round bales has largely replaced clamp silage on smaller farms, offering flexibility in timing and storage.
